We have collected all available material to give You an indepth view of the climatical conditions and some, for travelers relevant aspects of the weather in Puerto Vallarta. Due to the worldwide changing climate we base our tables on the last year eachwise, actually 2008. Read some basic information about the weather in Puerto Vallarta in our introduction, otherwise You may jump to the desired table of interest or see the monthly weather on the left hand menu.
The best travel time for Puerto Vallarta vacations is October through June. This period is the dry period. The time from mid June to mid October, the rain period, is less interesting as many hotels in Puerto Vallarta are closed and some of the most wanted activities in Puerto Vallarta are suspended.
Puerto Vallarta is located at the center-point of the Banderas Bay, one of the largest natural bays in the world. Situated on a coastal plain at the foot of the Sierra Madre Occidental, Puerto Vallarta is sourrounded by hills and mountains.
The Climate in Puerto Vallarta is tropical, with daily high temperatures between 18 and 35 C during the year. The climate devides into a dry season from mid October to mid June and a wet season with monsoon like rains from mid June through mid October.
The dry period is the perfect weather for vacations in Puerto Vallarta, as there is no rain and just very little cloudbuilding in the south of the bay, a nice skin tone is allways guaranteed. ( Dont forget protection. )
While June and October are still good months to visit Puerto Vallarta, the hot and humid climate in July and August make travel a real adventure. The rains mostly occure during the evening for two or three hours on 3 or 4 days the week, so taking a sun bath is still possible during the day.
The worst weather a traveler experience when hurricans are moving along the Pacific Ocean coast, from south to north. Puerto Vallarta normally is not affected directly by these hurricans, thanks to its situation deep in the Banderas Bay. There was just one mayor incident when Hurrican Keena hit Puerto Vallarta in 2003. Depending on the speed and the dimensions of the hurricans there may be up to a week with daily rain and very few sunshine in Puerto Vallarta.
The watertemperatures inside the Banderas Bay with its 42 km of coastal length are higher then in the Pacific Ocean, one of the reasons, why these waters are visited by the humpback whales from January through march.
The closest meteorologic station is No. 766013 (MMPR) located at the PVR Airport.

This table shows the average temperature, the daily high and the daily low temperature for Puerto Vallarta. The range over the year reaches from 14.5 to 32.3 degrees centigrade (Celsius). The average temperature is always higher than 20 degree centigrade (Celsius). Obviously this is one of the most important aspects for travelers and very characteristic for the weather in Puerto Vallarta. The highest temperatures are registered during the rain period in July and August which is the low season in Puerto Vallarta, as many travelers either dont like the hot and humid climate or the high quantity of rainy days.
This graph shows the quantity of sunny days compared to the days with rain falls. The rains find place mostly in the afternoon or evening, so many of these days allow a sunbath during the day. It is very good notable that the rain period lasts from (mid) June to (mid) October. It is important to know, that the rains in the beginning and the end of the rain period are not really important, as they often last less than an hour. From July through September the weather in Puerto Vallarta is dominated by the rains. However, the rains ares not cold like in the northern countries, but many activities and public events of touristic interest are suspended.
The table shows the count of days with rain in comparison to the days with thunderstorms. Thunderstorms are mostly caused by hurricans which are moving along the pacific coast from south to north. While these hurricans normally do not enter into the Banderas Bay, their magnitude causes a lot of rain with thunderstorms. Reviewing the graphs and numbers it becomes more clear, why june still is an aceptable travel month, as well as October. There finds place a magic date in October, around the 22nd, when suddenly the clouds are gone, and the dry periods begins.
Average Wind speed and high sustained wind speeds are shown in this graph. Blasts which are not sustained are not listed here as they only occure if a hurrican gets close. With a freshning average wind of about 10 km/h all over the year, the high temperatures can be taken easily. On the other hand it is still enough wind for sailors, as on the ocean it is allways a little bit more windy as in the village.
